ALT-EDIC at the Danish EU Presidency conference in Aalborg

DK EU Presidency Event 2025

Aalborg, 2–3 July 2025. ALT-EDIC Director Edouard Geoffrois spoke at “The Future of Digital Investments in the EU”, a Danish EU Presidency conference hosted at the Aalborg Kongres & Kultur Center. The event gathered policymakers, industry and research to examine how Europe should invest in its digital future to strengthen competitiveness and sovereignty.

In his presentation, Geoffrois outlined how a European Digital Infrastructure Consortium (EDIC) is a practical vehicle for multi-country digital investments. EDICs provide a legal framework that allow Member States to pool resources and coordinate cross-border projects, with governance and financing tailored to long-term operation. He linked this to ALT-EDIC’s mission in language technologies, where shared data, evaluation and service delivery can reduce fragmentation and accelerate adoption across European languages.

ALT-EDIC will work with partners from the conference to advance multilingual AI infrastructure that reflects European needs and values. For more on the conference and the EDIC framework, see the Danish Presidency event information and the Commission’s EDIC overview.

Lithuania

Lithuania is represented in the ALT-EDIC consortium by the Ministry of Culture, a governmental institution responsible for formulating and implementing state cultural policies in the fields of professional and amateur arts, theatre, music, fine arts, cinema, museums, libraries, publishing, copyright and related rights, and the protection of cultural heritage and language.

In response to recent advances in generative AI, Lithuania is actively exploring the development of large language models (LLMs) and supporting the ecosystem for the Lithuanian language. The Ministry of Culture has initiated an information campaign to engage both public and private sector organisations in ALT-EDIC efforts. Several companies have already expressed their interest. Lithuania is also funding a number of projects through Recovery and Resilience Facility (Next Generation Lithuania), aimed at accumulating language resources for AI systems. It is anticipated that these projects will complement the goals of ALT-EDIC.
